Shelves made out of books and an indoor garden

First of all, I'm happy to be back again after a short hiatus. I had a busy two weeks in lab and also moved apartments recently. But now I'm settled both into my new place and into my summer work schedule. So I can focus on crafting for the new apartment! :)

Anyways, awhile back, I upcycled a novel I was not very fond of into this lego-shaped storage box. Well, I have upcycled some more books in a...let's just say less permanent manner...and turned them into display shelves above my desk. I saw this somewhere but I can't remember where I was inspired by this idea. It might have been a post on Craft Magazine blog (an excellent site for ideas and inspiration by the way!). Anyways the point is that I don't take credit for this very clever idea.

Making the shelves was super easy. I just bought some L-shaped mounting hardware and drilled that into the wall. Then I placed the books on top of two of the mounts. I also rubberbanded the book together to keep the pages together and to keep the book stiff so that things don't slide off. I thought about gluing the pages together with modge podge, but in this way, I can still use the books for it's original purpose...reading! Anyways I absolutely love how it turned out! :)

Finally I just wanted to share a photo of my indoor garden consisting of oregano, basil and rosemary. My new apartment is a million times brighter with skylights and windows facing the south side of the building. So the number one thing I was most excited about was introducing more plants into my apartment, especially since I still don't have a porch or balcony. So I'll settle for this instead!

Anyways, as usual, thanks for looking and have a great weekend!

  1. That's a pretty nifty idea. I have to admit I rarely think of doing anything with my ever growing book collection other than reading them.

What do they look like on the wall and with stuff on them? I'm super curious. you should post a slightly wider photo that gives a little more context to the "book shelves" (tee hee).
